Have you ever wanted to start prayer journaling, but had no idea where to start—or how to even do it? You’re not alone! If you’re longing to deepen your faith, develop a stronger prayer life, or just need a simple way to stay connected to God’s Word, this blog is for you.
Today, we’re diving into how you can start prayer journaling in a way that’s powerful, effective, and totally doable—even if you’ve never done it before.
Why Prayer Journaling?
Maybe you’re in a season where you want to grow your faith. Maybe you’re walking through something difficult and need encouragement straight from scripture. Or maybe you just want to build a consistent habit of prayer and reflection. Wherever you’re at, prayer journaling is an incredible way to connect with God, reflect on His Word, and keep a record of how He’s been faithful in your life.
Two Journals That Make It Easy
Let’s talk about two of my favorite tools for prayer journaling:
-
The Gospel Prayer Journal
-
The Faith Prayer Journal
Both of these are from Mr. Pen, and they’re 30-day devotionals designed to make prayer journaling simple and effective. Each week focuses on a specific passage of scripture based on the journal’s theme—so for the Faith Journal, for example, week one is all about God’s faithfulness as shown in the book of Exodus.
What I love about these journals is that they guide you through the Word, help you reflect, and give you space to process and pray—all without feeling overwhelming.
The Stationery That Makes It Beautiful (and Mess-Free!)
Let’s be honest: having the right stationery makes prayer journaling way more fun. And when you're working in a Bible or journal, it’s important to use tools that won’t bleed through or smudge.
That’s why I love using the Mr. Pen Bible Journaling Kit. This set includes:
-
Non-bleed pens and aesthetic highlighters
-
Smooth swatching colors that feel amazing to use
-
A coordinated color palette that looks beautiful on the page
-
Different tip styles for writing, highlighting, and underlining
Every piece in the kit is designed with Bible-safe ink—no more worrying about ruining your pages! Whether you love neat underlines, bold callouts, or soft pastel accents, this kit has something for every journaling style.
And the best part? It’s under $10. Seriously, it has everything you need to get started.
Let’s Walk Through Day One Together
Let’s do a walkthrough of Day One in the Faith Prayer Journal. The passage for the day is from Exodus 34:4–10, where we see God’s incredible faithfulness in renewing His covenant with Israel—even after their unfaithfulness.
Here’s what that looks like:
“The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, ‘The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness…’”
—Exodus 34:6
You’re encouraged to read the passage, maybe even go back and read chapters 24 and 32 for more context. Then, take a moment to reflect. What is God showing you about His character? What part of the passage stood out to you?
How I Structure My Journal Entry
Once I’ve read and highlighted the passage, I like to use the blank journaling page to break my thoughts into three sections:
-
Meditation & Revelation
Write down the verse or thought that really stood out to you. Include any insights or revelations God gave you during your reading. -
Confession
Speak truth over your life. I write a confession based on the Word I just read—something I want to declare over myself in faith. -
Prayer
I finish by writing out a prayer—honest, simple, and from the heart. This is a moment to respond to what God is saying and invite Him into your day.
You can write as little or as much as you want. And with smooth pens and colorful highlighters, it’s honestly a joy to sit down and do this every day.
Bonus Tip: Track God’s Faithfulness
One of the best parts about prayer journaling is looking back. You’ll see prayers answered, faith grown, and God’s presence woven into your life. Some people even create a section just for prayer requests and praise reports—and let me tell you, it’s powerful.
Your journal becomes more than a notebook. It becomes a testimony.
