How to start Bible Journaling in 2026✨✝️

the SOAP Method

As we step into the new year, there’s no better time to refocus our hearts and minds on Christ and His Word. If you’ve ever wanted to start Bible journaling but weren’t sure how to begin, you’re in the right place. Today, I’m sharing a super simple, approachable method that anyone can use—no matter your experience level—to start diving into the Bible with fresh eyes and a renewed spirit.

We’ll be using the SOAP method—a powerful and practical way to engage with Scripture. And as we get started, we’ll be reading from the first few verses of Luke chapter 2, a beautiful reminder of God’s promises and presence. All the tools I use in this journaling session are linked below if you want to follow along with the same supplies!

Step 1: Scripture

The first step is simple—just read the passage. I like to slow down and read carefully, taking time to reflect and let the words sink in. One of my favorite tools during this step is a good set of highlighters. Color-coding helps me stay engaged and makes it easy to find key verses later.

Before I even begin reading, I take a moment to invite the Holy Spirit to guide me—to give me wisdom and revelation as I read. We’re not just skimming words on a page—we’re receiving truth that has the power to transform.

Step 2: Observation

After reading, I move into the observation step. Here’s where I really dig in.

I’ll take a few key verses, sentences, or even just single words that stood out to me, and I write them down. I take notes, highlight phrases, and allow space for the Holy Spirit to speak. Sometimes I’ll write a main word in a fun font, like bold block letters with a highlighter, then trace over it in cursive with a black pen. It just adds a little creativity and helps bring the page to life!

This is also when I pause and be still. I quiet distractions and take a moment to really listen. What is the Lord saying through this passage?

Step 3: Application

Next is application—one of the most important steps.

James 1:22 reminds us to be doers of the Word, not just hearers. So I ask myself: How can I apply this Scripture in my own life?

I’ll jot down a few practical steps I can take—maybe it’s a shift in mindset, a new habit to build, or something to let go of. However big or small, this is where transformation happens. Reading the Word is powerful, but living it out is where true growth begins.

Step 4: Prayer

Once I’ve read, observed, and applied, I end with a prayer.

Sometimes I use a sticky note and my favorite fine-line pen to write a prayer based on what I just read. It’s a quiet, simple way to close my time with the Lord—acknowledging what I’ve learned, asking for His help, and thanking Him for His Word.

Optional: Extra Thoughts & Creative Touches

This last part is totally optional, but I love adding a little "extra thoughts" section at the end of my page. It gives me space to process, reflect, or jot down anything else on my heart.

And if you’re like me, you might also enjoy decorating your pages—maybe some hand-lettered verses or cute bookmarks using your favorite Mr. Pen supplies. Bible journaling is completely customizable. There’s no “right” way to do it. The most important thing is that it helps you connect with the Word of God in a way that feels meaningful and personal to you.
