How to Stay Consistent with Reading the Bible | Where to Start, Best Tips, and Must-Have Tools

Have you ever wanted to build a Bible study routine but didn’t know where to start—or struggled to stay consistent once you did? If so, you’re not alone. The good news is, creating a meaningful rhythm with God’s Word doesn't have to be complicated. In fact, it can be joyful, peaceful, and something you look forward to every day.

Today I’m sharing how I built a Bible study routine that gets me excited, plus some of my favorite tools from Mr. Pen that make the process fun, beautiful, and easy to stick with.

🌱 Start Small and Simple

You don’t need a fancy plan, multiple commentaries, or hours of free time to begin. The key? Start small. Whether it’s:

  • 15 minutes in the morning
  • One chapter a day
  • Or just a few verses to meditate on

The goal is consistency, not quantity.

If you start with the expectation of reading 3–5 chapters a day, it might become overwhelming—and that can keep you from building a sustainable habit.

Where to Start in the Bible:

  • The Gospels: Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John
  • Psalms – for comfort, honesty, and worship
  • Proverbs – for practical wisdom

💡 Best Practices for a Life-Giving Routine

Here are some simple tips that helped me build a study routine I actually stick to:

1. Keep It Consistent, Not Complicated

Have a dedicated space or keep a bin or basket with your Bible, journal, and favorite tools. This makes it easy to start, even when you're short on time.

2. Make It Enjoyable

  • Light a candle
  • Play instrumental worship music
  • Use pens, highlighters, and sticky notes that make your heart happy

Bible study isn’t just spiritual—it’s personal. Make it a space you love being in.

3. Write It Down

Keep a notebook or journal nearby to jot down:

  • Observations
  • Questions
  • Prayers
  • Scriptures to meditate on

📌 Consistency Tip: Pair It with an Existing Habit

One of the best ways to stay consistent is to tie Bible study to something you already do:

  • Morning coffee? Read while you sip.
  • Getting ready for bed? End your day with the Word.
  • Going for a walk? Listen to a devotional from your Bible app.

Sometimes I’ll play an audio devotional as I’m getting ready, then read the Bible afterwards to go deeper. Don’t be afraid to explore what works best for your rhythm.

💛 Grace Over Perfection

This is big: The goal is connection, not perfection.

It’s so easy to fall into a perfectionist mindset—wanting every page to look beautiful, every session to be “deep.” But the heart of Bible study isn’t about looking spiritual. It’s about meeting with God.

“You can’t grow spiritual fruit like love, joy, peace, or patience unless you’re abiding in the Lord.”
See John 15:4–5

And abiding looks like showing up, day by day, no matter how messy or imperfect that looks.

If you miss a day? That’s okay.
Take a deep breath and start again.
Celebrate the times you did meet with the Lord.

🌸 Final Encouragement

Building a Bible study routine is about building a relationship with your Heavenly Father. Start small. Stay consistent. And enjoy the beautiful, sacred process of growing closer to Him.

Don’t let perfectionism steal your peace.
Let your routine reflect what it was meant to be: a connection with the God who deeply loves you.
