What is Bible Journaling? A Simple, Complete Explanation✨✝️

Hi friends!
Welcome back. My name’s Anna—and if you’ve ever wondered what Bible journaling is, how to do it, or if you even can do it (spoiler: you can!), this post is for you.

Whether you’re brand new to Bible journaling or just looking for simple tips and ideas, I’m going to walk you through what Bible journaling is, what you need, and how to start—all in a way that’s easy, fun, and filled with grace.

📖 What Is Bible Journaling?

Bible journaling is a creative way to spend time with God.
It’s about expressing your faith through color, reflection, and creativity as you study His Word.

You can draw, write, highlight, or simply jot down what you’re receiving from Scripture. It’s not about making something perfect. It’s about connecting with God in a personal way.

I love to Bible journal during my morning quiet times. If I’m reading and a verse really speaks to me, I’ll pause to draw, highlight, or write what I’m learning. It helps the Word come alive—and stay with me throughout the day.

🛠️ What Do You Need to Bible Journal?

You don’t need a ton of supplies to start. Here are my go-to tools—most of which are from Mr. Pen, my favorite source for faith-based stationery:

✅ Essentials:

  • A Journaling Bible – I love my Bible from Hosanna Revival. It has wide columns, perfect for notes and doodles.

  • No-Bleed Highlighters – Mr. Pen’s highlighters are smooth, aesthetic, and designed not to bleed through Bible pages.

  • Bible-Safe Pens – These give you a crisp, clean look without damaging the delicate paper.

🎨 Optional (But Fun!) Add-Ons:

  • Washi Tape

  • Colored Pens & Glitter Highlighters

  • Transparent Sticky Notes – Great for notes without marking the page.

  • Colorful Index Cards – For writing verses, prayers, or reflections.

✨ Do I Need to Be Artistic?

Not at all!
Bible journaling is for everyone, regardless of artistic ability or age.
You can go all out with designs and color, or keep it as simple as writing a few thoughts in the margin. Both are beautiful expressions of worship.

📝 How to Start Bible Journaling (Step-by-Step)

  1. Pick a Verse
Any verse that speaks to you will work! Today I journaled Philippians 4:4:

“Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say, rejoice!”

  2. Reflect on the Meaning
    Ask yourself:

    • What is this verse saying?

    • What is God teaching me through this?

    • How does this apply to my life?

  3. Write It Down
You can journal right in your Bible’s margin or use a colorful Mr. Pen index card. I often summarize the message and add a little context.

  4. Add Creativity (If You Want)
Use washi tape, highlighters, sticky notes, or drawings to highlight what stood out.
There's no wrong way to do it—it’s between you and God.

  5. Place It Somewhere Special
Tuck your card into your Bible, use it as a bookmark, or tape it on your mirror to revisit later. I love looking back at what I’ve journaled and seeing how God’s Word has continued to speak into my life.

📚 There’s No Wrong Way to Journal

Bible journaling is all about spending intentional time in the Word. You don’t need fancy tools or perfect handwriting. You just need a willing heart.

Each page in your Bible journal can look different—and that’s the beauty of it!
Play with materials, mix up your approach, and most importantly: enjoy your time with the Lord.

💬 Let’s Engage Together

Bible journaling is a community.
Let’s encourage one another to stay rooted in the Word.

❤️ Final Encouragement

As it says in John 1:1

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”

If you want to know Christ more, get to know Him through His Word.
Bible journaling is a beautiful, meaningful way to do just that.

Thank you for reading, friends.
Anna
